Ames resident challenges auditor incumbent
November 5, 2000
Story County voters will decide who will be the next county auditor Tuesday by choosing between Democratic incumbent Judy Emmons and Republican candidate Mary Mosiman.
Emmons, who has served two terms as auditor since she was first elected in 1992, brings more than 20 years of local government experience to the ticket. She served as the deputy auditor before that since 1978.
As auditor, Emmons is election commissioner for Story County, and is the clerk to the Board of Supervisors. The auditor also is responsible for preparing and certifying tax levies, maintaining financial records and keeping real estate transfer records.
Ames resident Mosiman said she has set her sights on improving the auditor’s office if she is elected.
“When I first heard about the history of errors in the county auditor, I felt I could do a better job,” she said.
Mosiman, who has been a Story County resident for 20 years, said her experience includes a history of accounting and business.
“I have the education, I have the experience and I want to serve,” she said.
Mosiman said she wants the voters to know the level of commitment to accountability she can bring to the office.
“If I was elected, I would set up a system of internal control to erase the history of errors,” she said. “I would also prepare for the [Government Agency of Accounting Standards] regulations in June 2003.”
Emmons could not be reached for comment.
