Letter to the editor: Don’t whitewash stories, just choose not to do them

Michael Stock

I would like to thank Greg Jerrett for making a point of the entire greek system in Friday’s issue of the Daily. No one likes to be accused of things we haven’t done You claimed in the your column that “as a whole” it is not true that the Daily participates in greek bashing. Oh wait, maybe an article here and there. The claim that the Daily is anti-greek has the same basis that all “fratters” are drunken, thieving perverts. They are simply the categorization of greeks based on the actions of a small handful of arrogant people. I think everyone has experienced what I’m talking about so let’s all have a Coke and a smile and stop pointing fingers. I do not expect you to whitewash stories set in greekland, but the choice to write an article and then several other follow-up articles about theft shows poor taste on the part of the Daily because of the small number of participants involved. The Blood Drive, Homecoming, Veishea and Greek Week, which you so proudly pat yourself on the back for covering, are the work of a significantly higher and more representative number of people. With the exception of Greek Week you would be targeting most of the student body. Or would you? EVERYTHING we do at college sets us apart. That is why any of us are here. It does not mean I think I’m better than “Johnny Dormroom.” If people feel that way, they need to reevaluate their self esteem. It does mean I am proud of the standards that have been set by the people who share this home hold themselves to. I also am ashamed when people fall short of them. This is probably what you refer to as “a guy being too much of a geek to live there.” “Animal House” is a movie. It’s hilarious. It’s also an exaggeration upon which no realistic person could classify another person. But if you must, let’s check out the “fact files” on the opinion of other groups of the time. I think we’ll find a similar trend in their validity and how things have changed. I think you also are mistaken about the drunken orgies that you claim monopolize our time. We have members here at the fraternity you claim to know so much about, who have maintained their celibacy and sobriety. The truth is fraternities warn all of their members that alcohol and sexual abuse WILL NOT be tolerated. If this kind of peer pressure is what you are referring to, then you are right, and it is a shame it cannot be taught in more organizations. Classifying me makes you feel more comfortable about your own college experience, but I cannot believe that someone being such an enlightening voice to his readers would have nothing more important to talk about than the unfounded, outdated opinion of people you don’t even know.
