Letter to the editor: Stillman should shut up, Veishea not about underage drinking
October 25, 2000
First, I want to say to Mr. Stillman that if you really wanted to show your support of interim president Seagrave’s decision not to require an alcohol free-pledge for Veishea, you should have kept your mouth shut.
Because when we get down to what you are really saying, it is that you can’t wait for Veishea this year because thanks to Seagrave, you’ll get to drink.
But apparently, Mr. Stillman, you have forgotten that you are still under 21, so no matter what the official policy is regarding alcohol at Veishea, you aren’t allowed to drink.
But more importantly, you have misjudged the whole point of Seagrave’s decision.
In fact, I would say that your column did more credit to the side of the argument that supports dry Veishea because it is an example of what the celebration is not supposed to be: another opportunity for students to abuse alcohol.
Underage drinking is one of the most unfavorable aspects of a Veishea celebration that includes alcohol.
Your fondly-remembered high school experiences with Veishea are not only appalling, but only provide ammunition to those of us that would prefer a celebration that didn’t include the pressure to drink.
