Wilson takes over at point
October 25, 2000
The ISU women’s basketball team is eyeing another big season and point guard Lindsey Wilson is ready to run the show.
Wilson, a sophomore, takes over the starting role at point guard from three-year starter Stacy Frese.
Wilson picked up experience playing behind Frese last season.
Three starters return for the Cyclones and Wilson feels comfortable stepping into the spot that Frese held for so long.
“We play together really well as a team,” Wilson said. “Everybody knows each other good enough that we kind of have a sixth sense about that on the court and that’s invaluable. At point guard, people depend on you. They have to trust you and have confidence in you and ever since last year it’s been building and that’s really important.”
As a freshman, Wilson averaged 15.8 minutes per game and finished with a scoring average of 7.2 points a game.
Wilson came off the bench to average double figures in scoring in five of the last six games including a team-high 15 points in a 66-65 loss to Penn State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Wilson prepared to replace Frese by working on her all-around game over the off-season.
“I don’t think there’s anything specific,” Wilson said. “Just overall, you have to get better every year and keep pushing yourself. It’s a constant priority if you want to be great. Just keep getting better at everything.”
ISU Women’s Basketball Coach Bill Fennelly sees Wilson as a tough, aggressive player that he calls a “power guard.” Wilson agrees that she fits that bill.
“I just play to win. I hate losing so I do whatever I got to do,” Wilson said. “I like physical and aggressive style. In different games, there’s different styles so I just play however the style suits.”
After bowing out in the Sweet 16 last year, Wilson feels her team is ready to make another run deep into the tournament and thinks the Big 12 conference will be tough again.
“We are hungry,” Wilson said. “We accomplished a lot of things last year but we also know there’s a lot of things left to accomplish.”
“The Big 12 is one of the best conferences in the nation. A lot of teams were young last year and getting better. I don’t think I can even name the top three teams in the conference this year,” she said.
