Letter to the editor: A polite reminder
October 17, 2000
I am writing this letter in behalf of students who believe homosexuality is wrong. To begin with, we are not arrogant, we are not closed-minded, we are not bigots, and we are not homophobic. We simply believe it is wrong.
My Christian morality says homosexuality is a sin. Please do not criticize this belief, because your beliefs are no better than mine just as mine are no better than yours. A more concrete reason I have is that scientific logic tells us humans were not created to be gay. One of the reasons for having males and females is so the species may continue by means of reproduction. Mechanically, same sexes are not compatible. I understand not all homosexual couples may be sexually active. However, not all heterosexual unions are either. With these thoughts in mind, we can still argue the overall reason for the different sexes is reproduction.
One thing that greatly frustrates me at Iowa State, as well as elsewhere, is while there is relatively little vocalized opposition to homosexuality, the response is very bitter toward it when there is.
When anyone speaks out against homosexuality, the well-established trend is to accuse them of bigotry.
Allow me to iterate: the same Constitution you look to for protection is the one that protects me too. Your freedom of speech is the same as mine.
I don’t wish to stir anything up. I do not dislike gay people. I dislike the sin. I know several gay people, and they are nice. I’m not trying to attack the person. I’m politely reminding you of the real reasons we speak out. Perhaps it would help your to keep your own mind open.
