Jesus vs. Satan

Amie Van Overmeer

While chain smoking cigars and waving around a red pitchfork, Satan debated with Jesus and a giraffe about the merits of his vehicle of choice. “My preferred mode of transportation is the Ford Pinto for its many cataclysmic crashes,” Satan said gruffly. Satan, better known as Ian Kenning, senior in biology, promoted evil as he debated Jesus and a chain-smoking giraffe at noon Friday in the free-speech zone located between the Hub and Beardshear Hall. Dressed in full costume, the three debate participants said they wanted to show the free-speech forums available to students. Kenning played the devil, while Brandon Riley, senior in psychology, posed as Jesus. Rob Deisz, senior in biochemistry, wore a giraffe costume, and Bryan Nichols, senior in biology, moderated the debates. “How many people use the free-speech area? Why not use it?” Nichols said. “We wanted to provide an open forum for the public on many different issues.” Moderating the hour-long discussion, Nichols led the three debaters through topics such as their favorite magazine, the Minnesota Twins, vegetarianism, whores on campus and the Olympics. Donning a wig, toga and halo, Riley presented his views from a moral perspective, including his view on donating sperm. “I do not agree with the masturbation side of it, but I do agree with sperm donation,” he said. While the focus of the debate was the ultimate determination of good and evil, Deisz, the chain-smoking giraffe, was there to represent the viewpoint from the Savannah. “Nobody gets to hear about what Satan or the giraffes think. We are presenting an unbiased look at the opinions of the devil and the giraffe,” Deisz said. “People seem to think there is only good and evil.” Demonstrating in the free-speech zone is not new for Deisz and Riley. The two participated in a Veishea protest in April 1999. Riley, wearing a beer-can costume, and Deisz encouraged students to sign a petition opposing the alcohol-free stipulation of Veishea. The debate participants said the two demonstrations are unrelated. “It’s just for fun and a joke – there is no relation,” Kenning said. “Basically, I want to spread a lot of evil through the populace and spread our evil to the masses.”
