Gap stores to come to Ames
October 1, 2000
Everybody will be in leather after the opening of a new store in Ames. Gap will open in North Grand Mall, 2801 Grand Ave., just in time for the Christmas rush, said Michelle Hamer, manager of the new Gap store. “I am really excited about having the opportunity to work in the Ames community, and I feel Gap will be a great addition to North Grand Mall,” she said. The new store will be located between Journey’s shoe store and Bath and Body Works. Gap, which is targeted toward young adults ages 18 to 24, is not the only store scheduled to open at the mall in December. Gap Kids and Baby Gap will also make their debut, with Hamer managing all three stores. Kurt Carlson, general manager of North Grand Mall, said the new shops will attract more customers as well as keeping people from driving out of Ames to other Gap locations in Iowa. “Having Gap in the mall will make it easier for us to secure expansion of other stores popular with college students,” he said. Students, however, have mixed feelings about the Ames Gap opening. “Finally Ames is getting a store that fits the age of the majority of its customers,” said Leslie Davie, sophomore in biology. Others like Jason Clevenger, senior in finance, said he would rather see a Best Buy come to the area. “I’m excited to a degree, but there are other stores I’d rather see come to Ames,” he said. “This is a step in the right direction though.” Carlson said he is currently trying to bring in another store that targets young adults, but he would not disclose the name of the store. He expects to announce the name of the store after he reaches an agreement with their management in the next couple of months. He said he expects construction to begin in early January.
