Long weekend for Cyclone soccer
October 7, 2000
It was a cold and windy weekend in Ames as the Cyclones hosted 14th ranked Texas A&M and the University of Texas.
On Friday, the Cyclones took the field against the Aggies of Texas A&M.
It was a physical battle that ended unsuccessfully for the Cyclones.
The Aggies defeated the Cyclones 3-0.
The first half went scoreless, but the Aggies out-shot the Cyclones 13-2.
After the halftime break, the Aggies opened up a streak outshooting Iowa State 25-8 and scoring three goals on goalkeeper Elizabeth Chapman.
The first goal was scored at the 53 minute mark by freshmen Kristen Strutz with numerous Cyclones around her.
Strutz received the pass from Andrea Stams 15 yards out, putting the ball in the lower left corner of the net.
Stams broke through the Cyclones defense scoring an unassisted goal in the 73 minute.
With only three minutes left to play sophomore Jessica Martin sealed the victory for the Aggies on a pass from Strutz.
“Texas A&M is the best team we’ve played so far,” said ISU Coach Stephanie Gabbert. “They’re not three goals better though. I also felt that we outplayed Texas A&M and it was very encouraging that we played all 90 minutes.”
The Cyclones had one day to recover as they hosted the University of Texas on Sunday afternoon.
The Longhorns scored early in the game as Kylee Wosnuk took Cyclone goalkeeper, Chapman one-on-one.
Wosnuk received the pass from Kati McBain placing the ball in the lower left corner of the net at the 13 minute mark.
The Longhorns added an insurance goal at the 40 minute mark by Mary Nelson.
Iowa State countered by scoring its lone goal in the 65th minute as Ali Sullivan took a Wilcox rebound and fired the ball past Texas’ goalkeeper.
The Cyclones had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds on a corner kick, but were unable to capitalize and lost by a 2-1 score.
“At the end, we thought we had it,” Gabbert said. “We can’t let in soft goals. Beth has been playing better throughout the season. It says a lot about our character that we fought until the end.”
Offensively for the Cyclones, Kati Antongiovanni and Nicole Wilcox led the team with a respective six and five shots.
Chapman tallied six saves for the afternoon against the University of Texas Longhorns.
The Cyclones are now 5-7-1, 1-4 and will host another weekend of soccer on Friday against the University of Oklahoma and on Sunday against Oklahoma State University.
“Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are right in the middle of our conference,” Gabbert said.
“If we play as well as we have in the last three games, then we should be successful. These two teams are good enough to beat us, but we’re excited about next week.”
