Letter to the editor: Mr. Senator’s Conservative Bigot University
October 14, 2000
Senator, I am dumfounded at how ignorant your comments were in your letter “Gay benefits a huge mistake, says senator.”
“Give social approval” or “legitimize” – legitimize what? As if Iowa State gives approval for gays to attend this institution.
Last time I checked, citizens of the United States, homosexuals, bisexual and even heterosexuals, have the same inalienable rights.
Maybe you missed that part of your law education at Iowa because you were too busy stopping the “erosion” of society by quelling others’ rights.
“Inalienable” means everyone has the same rights. As long as they do not break any laws, they shall not be denied.
Yet you wish to stop a group of citizens just like you (believe it or not) from being accepted by a public institution because they don’t fit your definition off what a mommy and daddy should be. Sounds like you are infringing on another’s rights or helping to infringe, but maybe I am reading too much into this because, as you said, I am just a child. Probably not.
You are infringing and asking a public institution to do so as well. Well, I hope President Hopper laughs at your comments and pays them no respect. Your words are the comments of a bigot and have no part at this university.
Senator Miller, I could care less where your sons go to school and what your views are regarding society.
Yours are not the only views at this institution, and your sons are not the only students here.
I also attend this university and I will not tolerate any asinine thoughts to corrupt this great institution, which is not called, Mr. Senator’s Conservative Bigot University.
