Letter to the editor: You are here to protect us

Frank Dunnick

This is a response to Mr. Jaeger’s comments regarding the Residence Hall policy prohibiting business solicitation.

It was a horrible event that occurred in Friley and more should be done to prevent similar events in the future.

Mr. Jaeger’s staff should work to ensure that the residence halls are as safe as possible.

No student should feel threatened in their own room.

However, Mr. Jaeger states that the prohibition of business solicitation is to prevent “students from getting ripped off.”

Mr. Jaeger, it is not your place, nor Iowa State University’s, to limit the business interactions of students, most of whom are over 18 and are thus adults.

I take no issue with the prohibition if it is simply intended to protect against would-be criminals who try to take advantage of the residence hall community.

Your comment implies this is not the case, and that it is simply a case of us students being too dumb to figure out if the magazine we subscribe to might not be in our budget. We are adults and should be treated as such.

Try listening to your assistant director who focuses on public safety. We pay you to protect us physically, not to be substitute parents. Respect our rights to make decisions as adults.
