Two ISU students arrested Monday for charges of breaking into an apartment complex and assaulting a man were released from the Story County Jail Tuesday.

Frankley Lem, freshman in industrial technology, and Grandy Vanlo, sophomore in mechanical engineering, were both charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief for breaking into an apartment complex at 520 S. Fourth St. on Sept. 22., said Sgt. Mike Johns of the Ames Police Department.

Scott Clausen, jailer at the Story County Jail, said each man posted a $56,500 surety bond to be released.

“Someone posted that for each of them to get out, but I don’t know who,” he said.

Lem and Vanlo, both of 1108 Burnett Ave., declined to comment on the situation.

“Warrants were issued for their arrest, and they turned themselves in Monday morning,” Johns said Tuesday.

Johns said two men entered the complex by breaking the security door. He said he was not sure what was used to break the glass.

“They then went to the apartment and illegally gained entrance into the apartment and then committed the assault on the victim,” Johns said.

Benjamin Chambers, 520 S. Fourth St. #4, was assaulted during the incident. Johns said he did not know the extent of Chamber’s injuries. However, he said Chambers does know Vanlo and Lem.
