Showcase 2000 features student work

Students majoring in apparel, merchandising, design and production in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences will showcase their work from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today in the LeBaron Hall Lounge.

J.R. Campbell, assistant professor of textiles and clothing, said the event – Showcase 2000 – focuses on the theme, “Piping Haute Stuff.” The mounted exhibit includes 30 to 40 pieces of apparel and garments created by students.

Campbell said a total of 45 to 50 pieces were entered in the contest where the competition was narrowed down to 30 to 40 pieces.

Students were judged primarily on creativity and technical ability.

First, second and third place winners in each category will be awarded during today’s exhibit, Campbell said. Refreshments will also be served.

Secretary to visit Iowa State

Secretary of State Chet Culver is on campus today to promote youth participation in the political process and to help students register to vote in the national presidential election Nov. 7.

Culver will speak from 11 a.m. to noon in the M-Shop, and he will lead a round table discussion about youth in politics at 3:30 p.m. in 302 Catt Hall.

Culver, a former high school government teacher, is the founder of the Iowa Student Political Awareness Club, which is aimed at educating and involving students grades six through 12 about politics. In addition, he is involved in the New Millennium Project, which studies youth voting patterns and is sponsored by the National Association of Secretaries of State.

Satellite presidential voting held this week

Students have a chance to cast their votes for the presidential election early with satellite voting on campus today, Thursday and Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Today, students can register and vote from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the atrium of the Design Building.

A satellite voting station will be set up from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Maple-Willow-Larch commons. On Oct. 25, students can register and vote from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
