The ISU women’s golf team showed some new faces in its traveling lineup as it finished eighth in this week’s Heather Farr Memorial.
The Cyclones ended with a two-day total of 632 at the year-old Omni Interlocker Golf Club in Brookfield, Colo. One aspect of the new course that gave the golfers problems was the multi-tiered greens.
“They were extremely hard,” said sophomore Sarah Gilbert of the three to four-tiered surfaces. “A lot of our trouble was with putts and hitting greens.”
“They were really tough,” said junior Erin Denefe. “You had to be in the right places to have a chance to make your putts.”
San Diego State won the tournament with a score of 600. The Lady Aztecs were followed in the standings by Colorado. The host school for this event, the Lady Buffaloes, wound up three strokes back of the champions. Nevada ended up with third place honors after completing the competition at 607.
The ISU golfers were very bunched up when the tournament was over. Noel Jacobusse was the Cyclone’s best competitor, tying for 11th place with a score of 153. Gilbert had a chance to travel with the team and was one shot back of Jacobusse after the first day of action. She finished in 37th place after shooting 159 over two rounds of play.
Freshman Lisa Meshke and sophomore Laura Wells shot dueling scores in both rounds to tie each other at 161. Denefe played in her second tournament of the fall season and rounded up the Clones scoring with a two-round total of 164.
“We’ve all been fighting to be a part of the traveling team, so it was nice [for me] to be able to play in the tournament,” Denefe said.
Joanne Clingan from San Diego State was tied with Colorado State’s Mayumi Motoyama after round one of the competition. Clingan then shot a 71 to take the individual title with a score of 140, leaving her closest competitor nine strokes back. Motoyama hung on for second, ahead of four golfers who were one stroke behind the runner-up.
For Jacobusse, Wells and Meshke, it was another tournament in a long, productive season. They have competed in all five events up to this point of the session, with each finishing in the top two.
“It’s impressive that they’ve gone this many weeks in a row with traveling, competing and school,” said Gilbert.
“A lot has been demanded of them,” said Denefe.
The ISU team now has one more Big XII school to visit before calling this part of its season a done deal. The lady golfers will conclude their fall schedule next week at the Sunflower Invitational next Monday and Tuesday in Manhattan, Kan.
