Letter to the editor: Gay benefits a huge mistake, says senator

David P. Miller

I was very disappointed to learn Iowa State adopted the Domestic Partner Benefits. Below are the comments I asked President David Hopper to give to the Faculty Senate concerning the issue.

I have had two sons recently graduate from Iowa State, and the third son is in his final year. Several years ago, when it was time for them to decide on a university to attend, I had a problem persuading them to go to Iowa State.

Southeast Iowa is known as Hawkeye country, and I was an alumni of their law school. I wanted them to go to Iowa State because I thought Iowa State had a more conservative social climate.

Now you are being asked to follow the University of Iowa and help carry their water for what is an extreme social agenda.

The crusade today to legitimize and give social approval to gay lifestyle is not a sign of progress. Rather it helps to erode the very culture and values upon which a solid society is established.

As one who has done a considerable amount of international work I can assure you that American morality is not something of which we can be proud.

Iowans and people throughout the world look to Iowa State as a example of what is good about Iowa. I and many other parents have sent our children here and entrusted them to your care.

I know certain social trends will continue, and our children at some point must make their own value selection. However I think it is a huge mistake for those in leadership to give approval and reward lifestyles and choices and social behaviors that basically undermine the family institution.
