Letter to the editor: I got the sarcasm, says letter writer
October 15, 2000
In “Ban Christianity,” Paul Hattan was a bit sarcastic. This letter, even understanding its sarcasm, made me quite perturbed.
It states “Christianity, with its history steeped in violence, has become a source of violenceÿin our populace and should be banned.” He goes on to back up this quote by saying, “86.57 percent of all Christians never attend mass.”
Now, I do not attend a Roman Catholic Church so I do not attend mass, but I go to church which is what heÿis implying. I have seen and know many Christians who do not go to church. That does not mean you cannot believe Jesus Christ died for every person on this earth, which is what Christians believe.
Another quote states, “Christians commit a murder/rape every .83 seconds (Matthew 1:69).” ÿNow if any of you who read theÿBible, you know that thisÿis not a great proof of your argument since there is no such thing as Matthew 1:69.
I do not know where Paul Hattan is gettingÿhis information, but unless he considers everyone on this earth a Christian there is no way that every .83 seconds a Christian murders or rapes someone.
It also statesÿ”Did you know that Hitler was aÿChristian?” Hitler might have been aÿChristian, butÿtrulyÿnobody knows that except for God. Nobody knows I am a Christian except for me and God.
Hisÿnext argument is not aÿhighÿquality one. It states, “Iÿonce heard a story about a Christian who committed murder/suicide by carrying his wife off of a 42nd floor balcony.”
Thisÿcould be true, as allÿChristians and non-Christians allÿencounter sin in their lives (Romans 5:12-13). To be aÿChristian is a hard life, but I am afraid that this evidence does not prove that Christianity is wrong and therefore should not be practiced.
The letterÿwas sarcastic, but when you write aboutÿa subject such as this, a person can take it the wrong way.
I wanted to point out one thing Paul said that was the most incorrect statement in the whole letter, “Do not get me wrong, I used to be a Christian, so I can speak freely on the topic and everything I say is the truth.”
First of all, you say you used to be a Christian. One who becomes a Christian, cannot be changed to a non-Christian.
Also, you can speak freely on the topic, but everything you say is not always going to be the truth. The only truth that can be found is in Jesus Christ who died for every man and woman on this earth for their sins (Romans 6:23). He is the only one who speaks the truth.
