Letter to the editor: Daily disgusts me

Marjory Eisenman

I become more and more disgusted with the one-sided stance the Daily has decided to take on the horrible situation in the Middle East. Today, I am completely sickened.

The editors who approved Friday’s cartoon should be ashamed. To equate Israeli soldiers with Nazis is pathetic and offensive. During World War II, the Nazis exterminated six million Jews. This is not equal to the Palestinians who are dying in Israel.

Jews in Nazi Germany did NOT provoke attacks as the Palestinians are doing today.

Get your facts straight! The article “Palestinians seek awareness” (Oct. 4) asserted the Likud party is extremist. That is entirely incorrect.

Although some members of the Likud party may be extremist, such as Ariel Sharon, the entire party is not. It would be like calling the Republican party extremist, just because some of its members are. Also, there are Israeli and Jewish students who attend Iowa State. Where were their views? Why was their opinion left out?

It is very easy to sit safely in our homes in the United States, watch the clips from the news gives us and make judgments on what is happening over there. Until you have been there, until you have a real grasp of life in Israel, you cannot judge.

Since the Daily has not printed Israeli viewpoints, here’s one from my cousin who lives outside of Jerusalem:

“I’m concerned that apparently many people outside are reading their newspapers and thinking that Israeli soldiers are marching into Arab towns and massacring Arab children.

“This violence is being started by the Palestinian Authority Police and Security Forces under the direction of Arafat who incite mobs to throw rocks and firebombs at soldiers who are on Israeli territory.

“These are not peaceful demonstrations – they are violent mobs determined to injure soldiers. It’s horrible that it results in Israeli soldiers firing live ammunition into these mobs, injuring and killing people, many of them innocent. Arafat pays families $300 for a child who is injured and $1000 for a child that is killed … Today in the main mosque in Gaza at Friday prayers, the Moslem cleric instructed his people to go out and kill Jews. Horribly, there are many Jews also out of control that have gone in groups to beat up and kill Arabs. Everyone in the Israeli government has condemned this, and people are being charged and tried for their crimes.

“The most upsetting aspect is that the NO ONE on the other side condemns the violence, and they are actually inciting it.”

As a former advising assistant in the Greenlee School of Journalism, I have kept up with the Daily to see what the students I advised are doing.

Their successes are important to me. However, I’ll be thinking twice about pulling up the Daily Web site.

No wonder in my two years at Iowa State, I never quite felt a warm, accepting and tolerant atmosphere.
