Letter to the editor: Juice-hatin’ Jerrett jumbles facts
October 31, 2000
I have read Mr. Jerrett’s column about the Juice Bill.
I do not know if this was intentional or not but the over generalization of Jerrett’s words, “They have found that everyone seems to be in favor of it,” is a fallacy.
The fact is that not all of IRHA was in favor of this bill. At Thursday night’s IRHA meeting, the bill passed by only three votes. The total vote was 13 for, 10 against, and 2 abstaining.
As the record shows, the vote was close and almost shot down the bill. In fact, one of the bill’s co-authors, Matt Kossoff, Wilson Hall representative, tried to vote “no.”
However, he was not allowed to vote “no” due to parliamentary procedure forcing him to abstain. RCA President Andy Walling and RCA At-Large Chris Knight both voted “no.” The reason, they explained, is that the majority of their constituents were against the Juice Bill. This is demonstrated by the RCA Assembly voting against the bill, 51-6, last Monday, Oct. 23. I, too, voted “no” Thursday.
I doubt the Daily or Mr. Jerrett purposely spread false information. I think there was just some misunderstanding of the information received. I just wanted clear up any fallacies mentioned.
