OSU has had recent success vs. ISU
October 11, 2000
ISU head Coach Dan McCarney and his team have four wins this year.
But McCarney has only one victory against OSU coach Bob Simmons during the three times the two teams have met.
1995 was the initial clash between the two coaches.
Freshman Todd Bandhauer made his starting debut on that day. The game against the Cowboys was significant for Troy Davis as well.
The Heisman Trophy finalist ended the day with 202 yards on 37 carries and a touchdown. After that performance, Davis became ISU’s all-time single-season rushing leader.
Davis and Bandhauer proved to be a good combination as Iowa State won handily, 38-14.The next year Davis rushed for 238 yards on 36 carries and two touchdowns.
The performance gave Davis the privilege of regarding himself as Iowa State’s all-time leading rusher and all-purpose yards producer. Despite Davis’s efforts and a 24-7 third-quarter lead, Iowa State fell to the Cowboys, 28-27.
The demise occurred in the last fifteen minutes of the game. Oklahoma State outscored the Cyclones 21-3 in that time span.
A national-television audience greeted the Cyclones and Cowboys in 1997. However, this game took on the appearance of a re-run for Cyclone fans.
Todd Bandhauer completed 14-of-18 first-half passes for 227 yards and touchdown tosses to Ed Williams and Gerrick Bivins. Iowa State went into the locker room holding on to a seven-point lead,14-7.
The Cyclones fizzled in the second half, as they succumbed to Oklahoma State for the second straight time by a final of 21-14.
Oklahoma State controlled the ball in the second half, with a time of possession of 21:12 to the Cyclones 8:48.
The key play of this game may have come on Oklahoma State’s defensive side of the ball.
Kevin Williams stopped a fourth-quarter Cyclone drive with an interception that set up the winning Cowboy touchdown.
