Duncan should step down

Editorial Board

The Government of the Student Body will consider a bill tonight to remove Inter-Residence Hall Association President Paul Duncan from the GSB Finance Committee because of his stand about Veishea.

Duncan and Towers Residence Association President Jonathon Weaver are sponsoring a petition asking GSB to zero-fund Veishea.

This is a clear conflict of interest.

Duncan insists that his involvement with the Veishea petition is as a student, not as the IRHA president or as a finance committee member.

However, Duncan and Weaver introduced the petition at a GSB executive board meeting, where they were acting as IRHA representatives.

By introducing the petition in this setting, it was inevitably linked with their positions as IRHA members.

Duncan has a right to his own opinions about Veishea, and he should represent, as a finance committee member, those who share his opinion.

However, starting a petition against Veishea interferes with his ability to fairly consider this organization during allocations.

Veishea is still a student organization, and they deserve the same access as any other organization to GSB funding.

There are 39 student groups who ask GSB for funding for Veishea-related events.

Duncan’s public stance on Veishea undermines his credibility when considering each of these groups.

This amounts to a substantial conflict of interest.

Duncan is already too involved with Veishea to consider the organization fairly in allocations. Duncan should resign from the GSB Finance Committee.

If he will not do so, he should be removed.
