Kansas State tops ISU volleyball in three games

The ISU volleyball team lost in a three-game match on Saturday at Kansas State. The Wildcats swept the season series from Iowa State for the fifth consecutive season.
Kansas State took the three games in a final score of 15-2, 15-6, 15-1.
Iowa State jumped out early 1-0 on a service ace to start game one before the Wildcats moved out in front with seven straight points. Unfortunately, the Cyclones would only score one more time in game one.
Kansas State held the Cyclones to just five kills on – .087 hitting percentage. The Wildcats tallied 15 kills on .423 hitting percentage in their game one victory.
In game two, the Wildcats jumped out early with a 7-0 lead before the Cyclones cut their lead to 11-5 on a season’s best – five service aces. Iowa State could not overcome their .037 hitting percentage in the 15-6 loss.
Kansas State broke open game three as the Cyclones could not answer back from the Wildcats 14 straight points.
The match was not a total loss for the Cyclones. Offensively, senior Stacy Nicks was the Cyclones top threat. Nicks tallied seven kills, had two errors out of 14 attacks and recorded a .357 hitting percentage for the weekend.
Leading the way in defense for the Cyclones was Julie Mitchell. Mitchell, freshmen middle blocker, contributed four total blocks, four kills and two solo stops with a .200 clip for the weekend. Mitchell led the Cyclones in blocking for the 10th time this season.
The Cyclones have outblocked 13 of their opponents this season but hold a 2-11 record while doing so. Junior outside hitter, Nanette Allen totaled six kills and a team-tying five digs.
The Wildcats posted 49 kills on a .442 hitting percentage with a season-best 10 service aces and 31 digs, while holding the Cyclones to 18 kills on a .000 hitting percentage with seven service aces and 19 digs. Kansas State had two players tally double digit kills to help improve the Wildcat record.
Liz Wegner led the way for the Wildcats as she totaled 18 kills on her career best .654 hitting percentage with a team-high seven digs.
Freshmen Cari Jensen was the other Wildcat to go over double digits. Jensen posted 10 kills on .500 hitting percentage and a career-tying three service aces. Senior Kelle Branting added nine kills on .357 hitting percentage in the victory.
With the win, K-State moved to 14-5 overall with its 10th straight victory over Iowa State and 8-3 in Big 12 Conference play.
The three-game victory also assured the Wildcats of a season sweep of the Cyclones for the fifth consecutive year. Kansas State also extended its winning streak over Iowa State to 30 straight games in 10 meetings, as the Wildcats have not lost a game against the Cyclones since 1996.
Iowa State drops to 2-18 overall and 0-11 in Big 12 action. Wednesday the Cyclones will be back on their home court at Hilton Coliseum to face the University of Texas at 7 p.m.
