Tough road trip for ISU soccer
September 23, 2000
The ISU soccer team road struggles on the road continued with weekend losses to Southern Methodist and Baylor. The losses dropped the Cyclones to 4-4-1 overall, and 0-1 in the Big 12. This season the Cyclones are 2-4 away from the ISU Soccer Complex. The women traveled to Texas on Friday to play the 22nd ranked Southern Methodist Mustangs. In the 25th minute the Mustangs took the lead when sister combo of Kim and Sarah Harvey combined for the first score. The goal was the lone score in the first half, as the Mustangs lead 1-0. Only eight minutes into the second half SMU netted a shot and took a 2-0 advantage. Then nine minutes after the Mustangs second goal, a third one was tallied. The two quick scores prompted Coach Gabbert to substitute senior Beth Leimer for starting goalie Elizabeth Chapman. Leimer made two saves before giving up the fourth and final SMU goal. Iowa State struggled offensively managing only five shots compared to SMU’s 17. Nicole Wilcox and Krista Odenwald both had a pair of shots, and Krista Voss added another. The ISU soccer team was shutout in the 4-0 loss. Yesterday’s game marked the beginning of Big 12 play for the Cyclones, as they traveled to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears. Windy and rainy conditions seemed to have no effect on the Bears, as they scored their first goal only six minutes into the game. Once again the Cyclones went into the half down 1-0. Baylor came out with another quick score in the second half scoring two minutes into the half. The Bears capped off their scoring in the 54th minute, posting a 3-0 victory. It was the second straight game the Cyclones were held scoreless. The Cyclones will be heading back on the road next week with games at Kansas and Missouri.
