Davis brothers bullied Rebels in past two meetings
September 6, 2000
UNLV has been good to ISU in the past. And in particular, one set of brothers. Troy Davis’s day in 1995 against UNLV was one for the ages. The legend of Troy grew exponentially as he rushed for 302 yards on 36 carries applauded by a home crowd of 37,619. On five of these carries, Davis scored. The school-record breaking runs included scampers of 20 yards, 8 yards, 66 yards, 80 yards and 5 yards. Davis left with 5:19 left in the third quarter. Backup tailback Graston Norris scored two touchdowns in Davis’s wake, while rushing for 128 yards. Norris bested Davis’s 80 yard touchdown run. His 91-yard gallop was the second-longest scoring run in school history. Iowa State won handily, 57-30. ISU’s 586 rushing yards were a school record. Its eight rushing touchdowns also made the record books. The 648 total yards is the second-best in school history. ISU averaged a nearly incomparable 8.4 yards per rush. And tied the school mark with 21 first downs by rush. Because of the rushing success, quarterback Todd Doxson threw only five passes. He completed all of them for 43 yards, but went down in the third quarter when he reinjured his ankle. When the defense did take the field, Michael Cooper led all ISU tacklers with nine. He and interior lineman Rudy Ruffolo each tallied a sack. Ruffolo had eight tackles and recovered a fumble. ISU’s 57 points were the most scored by a Cyclone team in nine years. Last year saw John Robinson coach his first home game for UNLV. But Iowa State and Darren Davis were bent on repeating the past. Darren rushed for 208 yards on 37 carries and two touchdowns. But the defense was the story on this night. Iowa State allowed eight yards rushing and only 106 yards overall, as the Cyclones defeated previously unbeaten UNLV 24-0. This win marked the first road shutout in 21 years. It was also the best defensive effort since 1982. The eight rushing yards allowed was good for seventh in the record books for an overall defensive performance. James Reed tackled four Rebels for losses and had a team high eight overall tackles. Eric Weiford had seven tackles and Robert Brannon, six, including a sack and a forced Rebel fumble. Iowa State rushed for 319 yards, while never allowing UNLV into the red zone. Quarterback Sage Rosenfels threw for one touchdown and a five-yard toss to tight end Andy Stensrud.
