Longhorns sweep ISU volleyball
September 17, 2000
Over the weekend, the ISU volleyball team fell to the University of Texas in three games. The Longhorns won the game by scores of 15-5, 15-7, 15-5. The Cyclones are now 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12 while the Longhorns improve to 2-5 and 1-1 in the conference. “I thought the difference was the quality of first contacts to theirs,” said ISU volleyball coach Linda Grensing. “Their first contact was better. Just in terms of handling the ball better, and they got the setter in a good position and were efficient on offense.” The Cyclones started off strong in the first game when they combined for 12 kills at a .161 clip as a team. ISU’s top performer of the night was Sarah Rollman; tallying eight kills and 11 digs. Along with Rollman, senior Stacy Nicks helped the Cyclones by contributing six kills for a team leading .235 hitting percentage. Nicks added one solo block on the night, moving her season total to 11. Nicks now owns 46 career solo blocks as a Cyclone. “Nicks stepped up and had one of her better matches of the year. She had a good performance,” Grensing said. Taking charge for the Longhorns were Kathy Hahn and Jenny Tannenberger. Hahn recorded 12 kills to Tannenberger’s 11. Along with the double-digit kill total, Tannenberger recorded 11 digs and served four aces again the Cyclone’s defense. “I think they [Hahn and Tannenberger] both had their best matches of the year,” Grensing said. “They’re both good, solid players, but I think we made them out to be a little better than they were at times.” Iowa State will be back on the court Wednesday when they play the Missouri Tigers. The game will not be played on the home court in Hilton Coliseum, but will be played in Boone at the DMACC campus.
