Comfortable clothes this fall
September 5, 2000
The time has almost come to trade in the tube tops and flip-flops for warmer fall wear. This fall season will have some trends that will carry over from last winter, but it also will have its share of new looks. Dawn Cowles, co-manager of Maurices at North Grand Mall, 2801 Grand Ave., said this season’s clothing is about “being comfortable.” “You can go really dressy or really casual,” she said. Cowles said the color charcoal and anything leather will be huge this season. She said her clothing shipments are containing lots of sweaters, especially turtlenecks. Brian Culp, assistant manager of Eddie Bauer at the North Grand Mall, said his store will be carrying more leather this year than it has in the past. The September issue of Marie Claire, a college-aged women’s fashion magazine, coincides with these fashions by showing plenty of turtlenecks and leather on its models. Angie Darrah, junior in finance, said she has put her buying power behind the trend. She said she bought “lots of sweaters and turtlenecks.” J.R. Campbell, assistant professor of textiles and clothing, said turtlenecks are definitely “in” this fall and said there will be “many things that play with the raised neckline.” “I find myself purchasing cargo pants and utility jeans,” said Jared Burns, senior in transportation and logistics. “I also see quite a few long-sleeve tees out there.” Wyatt Barnett, freshman in pre-business, said he has a relaxed style. “I tend to be more casual,” he said. A few styles are being carried over from last season into this fall. Cargo pants and plaid woven shirts can still be worn, Cowles said, and the color orange will be prevalent again.
