IRHA may form storage committee

The Inter-Residence Hall Association will vote tonight to decide whether a committee should be formed to take action against the new residence hall storage policy. Chris Knight, Richardson Court Association At-Large, drafted the bill asking the three residence associations to support changing some of the stipulations in the policy. Knight said the only way he can get support from all of the associations is by creating a committee. “We’ll be turning in a proposal or recommendation [of what we have found] to the Department of Residence,” he said. Last week, when the bill was introduced, Knight; Jeff Greiner, Union Drive Association vice president; UDA At-Large David Boike; and Oak-Elm representative Laural Everist-Lambert were the only set members of the committee. Knight said he will be opening the group to anyone who is interested. “I want to get everyone involved,” Knight said. Some parliament members said the work can be done without having a committee. Towers Residence Association President Jonathon Weaver said a committee is not necessary. “It’s a glorified way of doing something,” he said. “[Through a committee], you do a lot of stuff and get nothing done. Very little comes out of it.” Weaver was involved with the Government of Student Body and IRHA joint-committee to investigate the Department of Residence last year. The committee was formed when student security funds were being slashed, and it also looked into the Master Plan. “We found nothing shocking,” he said. “We had little or no effect on the department.” IRHA Vice President Steve Skutnik said he is unsure if the bill will pass, but he said he feels Knight’s committee could do good things for residence hall students. “The committee is arguably different [than others in the past],” he said. The meeting will be tonight at 7 p.m. tonight in the Gallery Room of the Memorial Union.
