Campus history is focus of tours

Every corner of campus will be covered today during Professor of Architecture Bob Findlay’s hour-long tour of the ISU campus. Findlay is hosting the tour as part of the statewide celebration of Architecture Month. The tour will be designed by whoever shows up, and what questions, memories or experiences people have to share, Findlay said. “The spirit of this tour will be stories and history of the campus,” he said. The free tour will begin at 5:15 p.m. on the east steps of Beardshear Hall and is open to the public. Findlay said he plans to discuss some history of the campus and the buildings surrounding central campus. “Findlay is very enthusiastic and anxious about the tour,” program coordinator Barb Schmidt said. Findlay said much of this discussion will be placed on the open public spaces, including central campus, the quad and a series of courtyards. He said he also will be talking about the evolution of the campus plan from an English garden to the present suburban setting and several changes in buildings and landscapes designs on campus. Findlay said many controversies have occurred at Iowa State due to its architecture. He said one of these was the plans during the 1970s to build Ross Hall on central campus. “There are many open spaces to build on, but places like central campus are such sacred ground,” he said. Findlay said the walk will be a good way for students, faculty and other members of the ISU community to learn more about the campus and its history. “I’m not a historian, but I have been here for 30 years, and I can speak for about 20 percent of the history surrounding the campus,” he said.
