ISU hockey wins pair

Although exhibition games are often overlooked, this was not the case Friday and Saturday as the Cyclones hockey team outscored the North Metro Owls. Iowa State used its strength to its advantage to counteract the Owls’ speed. “We’re typically a physical team, and without question that’s how we slowed them down,” said ISU Coach Al Murdoch. “They’ve got pretty good wheels.” The two games showcased the offensive firepower of both squads. In a 10-4 win on Friday night, the Cyclones were behind at first when Steve Malke scored on a power play just two minutes and 20 seconds into the first period. At that point, the scoring went the way of the Clones as they scored three goals in the first period, three in the second and four in the third. Glenn Detulleo finished with five points (two goals, three assists) to lead Iowa State. Derek Bendell was the best offensive answer from the Owls, scoring two goals in the second period. On Saturday, the barrage continued with an 11-6 Cyclone win. Detulleo and Jeremy Meyer each scored hat tricks, with all of Meyer’s goals in a 15-minute span during the third period. “We’ve really just started to gel,” Meyer said. “We started out pretty slow, but once we got our lines together, it started to flow really nice. I guess by the third period it just worked out really well.” With the aggressive play from both teams, there were numerous penalties. By the end of Saturday’s game, the Cyclones accumulated over 30 penalties for the weekend. “Generally, we’re a fairly disciplined team,” Murdoch said. “We’ll eliminate the penalties for retaliation, and, once we do that, we’ll be in good shape.” Aggression spilled over to physicality during the second period of Saturday’s game. With 2:37 left, ISU forward Mark Krueger got into a fight with Owls forward Tom Dwelly. The two were finally separated by referees, but both were ejected. While being led away, Krueger spun suddenly, making the head referee tumble to the ice.
