ISU volleyball picks up second win of season at Wichita State Tournament

After only winning three matches a year ago, the Iowa State volleyball team is already over half the way to that win total notching their second win of the season this weekend in the Wichita State Tournament. The win over Wichita State coupled with three losses to Montana, Louisiana Tech and Butler drops the Cyclones record to 2-5 on the season. In the first game of the tournament vs. Montana, ISU dropped the first two games, 15-9, 15-8, before rallying for a 16-14 win in the third game. The Cyclones were unable to hold on in the fourth game falling 15-8 on the way to a 3-1 loss. Senior Stacy Nicks led the Cyclones vs. Montana with a team-best 14 kills on her way to her second double-digit kill performance of the season. Sophomore setter Sarah Stribe dished out 31 assists to the pace the Cyclone attack while junior outside hitter Nanette Allen led the defense with 9 digs. Sophomore Sarah Rollman also added a career best four service aces against the Grizzlies. Montana outhit the Cyclones tallying 66 kills to Iowa State’s 39. The blocking attack didn’t factor much into the outcome with Iowa State totaling 5.5 blocks to Montana’s 8. The win over Iowa State raised Montana’s record to 2-2 on the season. In ISU’s afternoon match vs. Louisiana Tech, the Cyclones were able to rebound after the Lady Techsters started out the first two games of the match strong winning both, 15-7, 15-6. ISU took the third game of the match, 15-4, before falling in the next 6-15. Nicks and Allen led Iowa State on the offensive side totaling seven kills each. Stribe recorded 14 assists and two service aces to aid in the Cyclone attack. Iowa State was outhit 46 to 28 while Louisiana Tech also led defensively with 54 digs to the Cyclones 45. The win raised Louisiana Tech’s record to 3-3 on the season. Saturday was a day of career-highs and season-bests for the Cyclones as five players met those feats. Iowa State met Butler in their first match on Saturday falling 3-1, 14-16, 8-15, 15-13, 9-15. Iowa State had three players record double-digit kill performances. Allen led the Cyclones with a team-high 18 kills and 15 digs while Nicks again had a solid match posting 11 kills and seven digs. Sophomore Mandi Harms was the other Cyclone in double-digits in kills tallying 10 with eight digs. Iowa State also had four players total double-digit kill performances posting the most team digs (101) since Sept. 20, 1996 when they recorded 106 digs vs. New Orleans. Rollman posted a career-high with 19 digs while freshman April Gerloff added 11 digs. Stribe turned in season-bests of 56 assists and 20 digs to lead the Cyclones in both categories. The win upped Butler’s record to 3-1. ISU’s final match of the tournament proved to be the most exciting and the most rewarding. The Cyclones came out quickly picking up a 15-13 win in game one before Wichita State countered with 16-14 and 15-3 victories. Iowa State refused to give up taking the next two games 15-12 and 15-11 on their way to clinching their second win of the season. ISU’s hitting attack was again strong as three Cyclones tallied double-digit kills with five having double-digit digs. Allen led the Cyclones with a career-high 22 kills and also added 11 digs to record her second straight double-double. Nicks smashed 15 kills and a career-high six blocks while freshman Steph Suntken slammed down a career-best 10 kills. Rollman, Gerloff, and freshman Renae Pruess all totaled 13 digs each while Stribe recorded 11. The loss dropped host Wichita State’s record to 3-2 on the season while the Cyclones came out of the tournament with a 2-5 record. “We got better as the week went on ,and we played with a lot more maturity,” said Coach Linda Grensing. “To be able to do that with freshmen and sophomores is good. Our consistency is getting better.” Next action for ISU will be on Sept. 13 vs. Kansas State to begin Big 12 play. The match starts at 7 p.m.
