Cuffs funding unlikely
September 13, 2000
The new Cuffs club for people who enjoy BDSM (bondage, dominance and sado-masochism) has been causing something of a stir on campus the last couple of weeks. Students on one side of the issue are absolutely disgusted with the idea that this sort of behavior has even the remotest chance of being funded by the Government of the Student Body. Other students either don’t care or feel that if the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered Alliance and Allies can be funded, then why not Cuffs. The fact of the matter is that Cuffs getting funding this year as a fall special is about as likely as a third-party candidate winning the presidency in November. Money is tight and a great many clubs look for cash to fund activities, both educational and social. While it has been a great source of amusement for us at the Daily to have Cuffs in the news and in the Opinion pages, we know that there are those with serious concerns about the lifestyle Cuffs represents and what it would mean for GSB to legitimize them with funding. Rest assured that even if GSB did by some miracle fund Cuffs, our campus would not suddenly turn into Sodom and Gomorrah. The reasons are far too obvious. By tacitly legitimizing bondage by funding it, GSB could easily be held liable if someone did accidentally get hurt after an educational meeting. They also don’t need the attention from religious groups and the media who would want to interview them all for the salacious details. And which GSB members want to go on the record as voting for this one? Student money is better spent funding clubs that educate and entertain the masses in ways that cannot be found at the local porno store, in the library or on the Internet.
