Career Day prepares students for future
September 18, 2000
Job and internship opportunities will be available for ISU students today at the annual College of Business/Liberal Arts and Sciences Career Day. As many as 200 employers are expected to attend the career event, which will run from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. Many employers who attend the Business/LAS career day say it is “second-to-none,” said Steve Kravinsky, director of the ISU Business/LAS Career Services. Kravinsky said the event is larger than many of the Big 12 comprehensive career fairs. Kathy Wieland, experimental learning coordinator for the ISU Business/LAS Career Services, said companies want to come to the career fair because it brings potential employees to them. She added that companies want to attend the career events with the most student turnout to ensure their recruitment funds are well-spent. An interview session will be held after the career fair. Wieland said the interview session is another benefit for employers attending the career event because it helps eliminate additional costly visits to campus for interviewing. Kravinsky said that after accommodating the students’ and companies’ requests, along with the improvement in the economy, the number of companies attending the career day “grew exponentially.” At the 1992 career event, fewer than 100 companies were in attendance. Kravinsky said the state of the economy brought in the low numbers. He said a wide variety of employers at the career event gives students more choices and opportunities and challenges the students to prepare for handling similar atmospheres in the future. Jessica Millhollin, senior in marketing and transportation and logistics, has received two internships by attending past career events. “[The fair] has been a valuable tool in connecting to companies,” she said. Millhollin also said the career day is diverse in the types of companies attending. She said that having a wide variety of large and small corporations allows many students to find companies that interest them.
