IRHA to elect its president, vice president

Members of the Inter-Residence Hall Association will appoint a new president and vice president tonight after a parliamentary vote. Andy Walling, president of the Richardson Court Association, said a parliamentary appointment, as opposed to an open election, will fill the vacant seats more quickly. “It allows a qualified president and vice president to be seated in the least amount of time,” Walling said. “It allows IRHA to get back to business as soon as possible.” Oak-Elm representative Laural Everist-Lambert agreed with Walling and said “[an open election vote] would have been very time consuming and costly. I think this is the best way to do it.” Students who filled out applications will be given two minutes to present their platform in front of the parliament. After all applicants have spoken, parliament members will open the floor for discussion. The positions will be appointed by a majority vote. “I think that by allowing the current student leaders the opportunity to examine and appoint the next president and vice president we are going to get the best candidates for the job,” Walling said. Matt Heerema, Towers Residence Association at-large representative, said he will be looking for someone who will be a good leader for IRHA. “[I want] someone who is enthusiastic, has a vision for IRHA, is well-spoken and is committed to the cause [of IRHA],” Heerema said. Walling and Everist-Lambert said they’re also looking for someone with experience, so he or she is familiar with the requirements of the job. “I definitely think experience in a leadership role would be helpful,” Everist-Lambert said. “It’s open to everyone, but it would be good to maybe have background in government experience.” Walling said knowledge of parliamentary procedure would be necessary for the vice presidential candidate. “The vice president needs to be fully versed in Robert’s Rules of Order,” Walling said. “He or she needs to be someone who can facilitate the discussion on the IRHA floor.” The meeting will be tonight at 7 in the Gallery Room of the Memorial Union. It is expected to last no more than two hours, Heerema said. “I would encourage all students, especially the constituents of IRHA, to attend, as this is their government at work,” Walling said. “These circumstances have allowed the three residence associations to work very closely and collaborate, which will produce a stronger and prouder IRHA.” The IRHA race is open to any ISU student that has lived in the residence halls for three semesters and has a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Applications are available at RCA, TRA and Union Drive Association hall desks. The deadline is noon today in the IRHA office, 2415 Friley.
