September 16, 2000
The ISU’s soccer team found mixed results over the weekend. The Cyclones snapped the University of Georgia’s 23 game home non-conference unbeaten streak Friday, running away with a 2-0 victory infront of a 1,948 attending crowd. On Sunday, the Cyclones traveled to Columbia, S.C. to take on the University of South Carolina and lost 2-1. In the victory over the Bulldogs, both teams went into the half in a scoreless game. It wasn’t until the second half at the 64-minute mark when ISU’s Ali Sullivan scored on an assist from freshmen Nicole Wilcox. At the 74-minute mark Sillivan would add an additional goal to seal the victory for the Cyclones. The win marked ISU’s goalkeeper, Elizabeth Chapman’s fourth shutout. South Carolina struck first Sunday at the 20-minute mark when Becca Epstein took the rebound from Jessica Julin and scored from six yards out. Morgan McIntyre added an unassisted goal 68 minutes into the game to extend the lead. ISU’s Katie Antongiovanni scored the Cyclone’s only goal of the day at the 81-minute mark off an assist from freshmen Nicole Wilcox. Antongiovanni beat the Bulldog’s goalkeeper on a one-on-one shot from 13 yards out. The Cyclones outshot the Bulldogs 11-7, but South Carolina’s goalkeeper Elise Matthew’s came up with five saves to shutdown the Cyclone offense. Chapman gave up two goals, a season high in the loss. South Carolina came up with its first victory of the season to improve to 1-6 while the Cyclones fall to 4-2-1. The Cyclones are back in action on Sept. 22, traveling to Southern Methodist University.
