National journal honors ISU prof

An ISU professor will be receiving an award for his contributions to a national journal. J. Herman Blake, professor of educational and leadership policy studies, will be receiving the Council for Opportunity in Education Board Chair’s Award. Blake earned the award for the work he did as special editor for the Journal of Negro Education’s issue “The Full Circle: TRIO Programs, Higher Education, and the American Future.” “I am very pleased and proud to receive the award,” he said. He said he did not expect the award and did the work because he was committed to it, and not because he expected recognition. Blake said he could see himself being called upon to work on the journal again, but he does not know if he would accept the offer. Each volume of the Journal of Negro Education has a different subject and solicits people the publishers believe would be helpful in working on those issues. John Schuh, professor and chairman of educational leadership and policy studies, said Blake is involved in a number of activities at Iowa State, particularly citing work with African American Studies and the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Programs. Blake has been at Iowa State since January 1998. The journal was distributed to all state legislators in education, all members of the U.S. Congress and U.S. Department of Education staff members and administrators. The Council for Opportunity in Education’s Nineteenth Annual Conference is taking place Sept. 17 to 20 in Washington D.C. Blake said he will be attending the conference and will receive his award Sept. 19.
