ISU volleyball starts Big 12 play tonight
September 12, 2000
After a disappointing 1-3 weekend for the ISU volleyball team, the Cyclones have a chance to redeem themselves this week as they face up against two teams from the Big 12. Saturday, the Cyclones will travel south to play the University of Texas. Last season, Texas made the NCAA tournament, placing 3rd with a 15-5 record. Texas struggled to begin the season as they opened with a 1-4 record and finished the weekend falling short to Washington 3-2. Before the Cyclones go south, they must defend their home court tonight at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones will host the Kansas State Wildcats in a Big 12 conference game. The Wildcats return after winning the Wildcat Classic this past weekend, sweeping all three opponents. The Wildcats had four players record over ten kills. “They’re a great team, they’re very well coached,” said Coach Linda Grensing. “I have a lot of respect for Jim [McLaughlin]. He does a great job training and teaching them, they’re hard working players.” Even though the Cyclones enter tonight’s game with a 2-5 record, coach Grensing isn’t concerned. “I’m glad we’ve had seven matches,” said Grensing, “We’re very young and inexperienced and any experience we could gain is significant to us.” The Cyclones are led by one senior this season and the great majority of the team is newcoming freshmen. Tonight, the Cyclones will focus closely on the Wildcats. “I think as we talk about any match, we really focus on our goals, break it down by position,” Grensing said. “We’ll keep working on things and getting better and better.”
