GSB gets into routine with funding
September 4, 2000
The funding for a mailing that was sent recently to all ISU freshmen will be discussed at tonight’s Government of the Student Body meeting. GSB will discuss the reimbursement of the GSB advertising account and Freshman Council for the mailed fliers. GSB Vice President Lisa Dlouhy said the funding bill could get a little “sticky.” “The problem is that the bill wasn’t ready to go last week,” Dlouhy said. She said the bill’s merits aren’t under debate, but senators have questioned the way in which the bill was presented. Last week, the senate voted down a motion to waive the second reading of the funding bill. This week, the senate probably will vote on the bill to reimburse the advertising account and Freshman Council for the mailing. “It’s more technical details than anything,” Dlouhy said. “There is a fine line between upholding strict legislative process and seeing the meaning behind some of the things we are doing.” GSB President Ben Golding said he hopes the senators see past the bill’s procedural shortcomings. “I expect that there’ll be some senators that have concerns,” Golding said. “The bill will be amended by its original sponsoring senator to reimburse the two organizations involved. Obviously, this is not the ideal situation, but I expect the senators will look at the substance of the bill.” Also on the agenda is a senate order to create a new position in the senate called the special assistant for internal legislative affairs. This position, which would be filled by former senator Chris Wisher, will serve to advise the speaker and vice speaker on historical precedents and legislative procedure. “One of the things that we lack here is that we don’t have someone that’s been around forever,” said Alex Olson, off-campus senator. “Chris has been here a long time. He wrote many of the bylaws, and he can help us see the motivation behind them when they were written. We’re all about using resources that we already have.” The Government of the Student Body will meet tonight at 7 in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. The following will be discussed: Old business A funding bill that will reimburse the GSB advertising account and Freshman Council for funds used on a recent mailing to all ISU freshmen. A funding bill for furnaces for the new Gaffer’s Guild facility. By Olson, Johnson and others. New business A Senate order which creates and seats the special assistant for internal legislative affairs. By Olson, Johnson and others.
