Concert Review: Jonny Lang scores in Mason City with emotional performance

Beth Kohoutek

Jonny Lang doesn’t express himself through his guitar. He breathes, speaks and sweats through it. The 19-year-old Lang played his fusion of funk, rock and blues to a sold-out Mason City crowd at the North Iowa Area Community College Auditorium on Wednesday evening. He opened with the hit, “Still Rainin’,” and proceeded to play favorites from two of his past albums, “Lie To Me” and “Wander This World.” With his moving guitar solos at the heart of almost every song, Lang proved that he is truly a master of the high end of the fret board. His gruff, yet unbelievably melodic, age-belying vocals subjected the room to a wide range of emotions, from despair and loneliness to sweet release. He is equally adept at evoking emotion with light, gentle whispers and with growly, desperate yells into the microphone. Close your eyes during his set, and you would swear you were in a dusky bar listening to an old, chain-smoking blues great. A highlight of the evening came when Lang traded his electric guitar for an acoustic, was flooded in blue and green spotlights, and proceeded to enrapture the audience with “Irish Angel,” a gorgeous, hushed piano and acoustic guitar number that cannot be found on any of Lang’s albums. The audience sat in frozen amazement as Lang softly performed the ballad. The song, written by Lang’s keyboardist and songwriting collaborator Bruce McCabe, made its public debut in Davenport on St. Patrick’s Day last year, and has been a hit with live audiences ever since. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed that it will find its way onto Lang’s next album, due out early next year. Later in the evening, Lang and saxophonist David Eiland faced off with their respective instruments and battled note for note. Lang would play a short burst of notes on his guitar, which Eiland would mimic and add to on his sax. This display culminated with a funky, roof-raising duet that sent the entire audience to their feet. After an 90-minute set, Lang encored with his most popular tunes, “Wander This World,” the acoustic “Breakin’ Me” and his breakthrough hit “Lie To Me.” Lang and his band exited the stage to the roar of a completely satisfied and appreciative audience.
