Alcohol may be biggest contributor to weight gain

Tastes great, less filling – but it equals more weight. consumption adds extra calories to college students’ diets and causes weight gain, said Jolene Wolf, dietitian at Mary Greeley Medical Center, 111 Duff Ave. Wolf said many students drink alcoholic beverages and do not think about the extra calories they are consuming. “The No. 1 thing [to avoid weight gain] is to not start drinking beer,” Wolf said. When alcohol is consumed, the body does not send a signal that it is full as it does for calories from solid food, Wolf said. When a person drinks alcohol, they do not become full and end up eating more, which leads to weight gain and the infamous “beer gut.” The number of calories contained in different drinks varies.
