ISU women golfers win again

Iowa State Daily The ISU women’s golf team continues to play well during the first few weeks of this season. The Cyclones followed up a win in Cedar Falls by finishing first at the Lumberjack Invitational Tuesday in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Clones had a one-stroke lead after day one of the tournament before pulling away from the University of San Francisco. The Dons finished ten strokes back of the Clones and ten ahead of third-place finisher San Diego State. Noel Jacobusse led the team with a two round total of 74-74-148, finishing as the runner-up of the tournament. Laura Wells completed her tournament with a score of 151, putting her in fourth place. Lisa Meshke continues to place high in the standings in her freshman campaign. She tied with senior Cathy Ennis at 152, good enough for fifth place. Wells and Meshke both had better second rounds. Meshke cut six strokes off her first day total, and Wells bettered her first round total be five strokes. San Francisco golfer Lisa Chen won the invitational with a two-day total of 73-72-145. The Cyclones now head to Waco, Texas to play in the Big 12 Preview. Baylor University hosts the event on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. The ISU men’s golf team finished seventh at this week’s Kansas Invitational as they began a two-week swing through the state of Kansas. Matt Gatchel finished on top for the Clones, tying for 17th with a score of 74-79-72-225. Gibby Martens from Texas-San Antonio finished with medalist honors, shooting 69-73-68-210 over three rounds. Three other Big 12 teams competed in this tournament, finishing in the top three spots. Host team Kansas won the invitational with a total of 861, followed by Missouri. The Tigers finished 31 strokes behind the Jayhawks, while Kansas State ended up in third place with a total of 899. The squad had final scores that were within ten shots of each other. Behind Gatchel, Kevin Oswald shot a 228 to finish second on the team and tied for 25th place overall. Josh Clay shot 231, Phil Slovitt completed his tournament at 233, and Jamie Faidley finished at 235. The Cyclones continue their tour of the Sunflower State next week. Kansas State will host the Jim Colbert Invitational, which will be played Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 in Manhattan.
