Gore to speak in Des Moines Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore will give a speech at a rally in Des Moines Wednesday, making his final public appearance before the national debates begin next week. The rally will begin at 11 a.m. at Nollen Plaza, 4th Street and Walnut. Free transportation is provided by the Story County Democrats. Departure time is slated for 10 a.m., and they are expected to return to Ames around 2:30 p.m. For reservations, call the headquarters at 268-0313. – Wendy Weiskircher Council to vote on Boheme’s license renewal The Ames City Council will vote tonight on a one-year liquor license renewal for the Boheme Bistro, 2900 West St., said City Councilman Herman Quirmbach. It will be voted for under a consent agenda, meaning one vote will renew all eight liquor licenses up for renewal. Quirmbach said Ames Police Chief Dennis Ballantine is recommending the Boheme be given a one-year license renewal since they have taken steps to fix their prior violations. The Boheme was the first business to undergo a new liquor-license renewal policy this summer that limited underage violations to 12. On Sept. 12, the City of Ames again changed the criteria. The new regulations take into consideration the effort bar owners put into reducing violations. – Kati Jividen
