The ISU Women’s Tennis team serves up its fall season this weekend when the Cyclones make their debut at the Billiken Invitational at St. Louis University. The tournament runs from Friday to Sunday and features brackets for singles and doubles. The singles bracket is split into four divisions with each team having two players in each bracket. Junior Noortje Cornelissen and sophomore Kristin Gyaki will play in the top singles bracket while sophomore Courtney Leese and junior Edna Vazquez will play in the second. Juniors Sharla Whitaker and Karin Westberg round out the list of Cyclones competing. The players will team up with the other player in their bracket to play doubles. Vazquez and Leese totaled 21 wins as a doubles team last season. The Cyclones have gone through two weeks of practice, and Coach Michele Conlon likes the level at which her team is playing. “I feel good going into the tournament,” Conlon said. “I didn’t feel comfortable last week in terms of how people were playing. This week they seem to be a little more sharp and match ready. I’m comfortable that we’re going into the weekend ready to play.” One area in which the Cyclones have been struggling with is injuries. Sophomore Tara Goedjen will not be making the trip due to tendinits in her elbow, and Whitaker and Westberg also suffer from tendinitis. “There’s a couple of girls that are battling some injuries,” Conlon said. “They’re going to need to be extra mentally tough and keep the proper focus because they may not be at their absolute best. I think they’ll be tough.” Over the two weeks of practice time, the Cyclones have been concentrating heavily on getting in match shape. Aerobic conditioning and plyometrics are some of the workouts that the Cyclones have been working with to become fit enough to grind out three set matches. “I think we’re in good shape,” Conlon said. “The team has been working extraordinarily hard in putting more time with conditioning, both anaerobic and aerobic. We’ve also been emphasizing plyometrics to help with quickness. Our goal is to be in incredible shape, and I think we can achieve that.” Other teams in the tournament are Indiana State, St. Louis, Murray State, Southern Illinois, Creighton, Memphis, Illinois State and Northern Iowa. “There will be some good competition despite the fact that there’s not any Big 12 Conference schools there,” Conlon said. “All of the teams down there are solid and will require us to compete hard and play well,” she said.
