Luncheon to discuss afterlife
September 25, 2000
The truth about heaven and hell will be discussed today during a luncheon sponsored by a campus religious group. The ISU Seventh-Day Adventist Student Association will be hosting a discussion from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 230 of the Memorial Union. The group will discuss its belief of where people go after they die – not up above, not down below, but asleep. “We like to discuss the topic with people,” said Guy Helmer, treasurer of the group. “There are a few topics that are unique to the Seventh-Day Adventists. One of them is the biblical view we have about life after death.” Adventists believe the Bible differs from the popular belief that people go to either heaven or hell immediately after they die, said Helmer, graduate student in computer science. The Adventist faith teaches that while everyone will be judged eventually, it is not at death but at the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Adventists believe ideas about perpetual fiery torments and ethereal harp players on clouds belong in the realm of fantasy. “It’s a new event for the group,” said David Lincoln, pastor at Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1303 Grand Ave. “We thought people might be interested in this issue.” Lincoln said he isn’t sure how many people the 10-member group should plan to accommodate, but he said they are anxious to meet others. “We don’t know how many people will show up,” he said. “We have been doing some advertising though.” Helmer said the vegetarian meal provided during the luncheon follows Adventist attitudes. “We like to promote the idea of healthy living and eating,” Helmer said. “Vegetarianism provides a free sample of our beliefs.” Lincoln, who will be the main speaker at the lunch, said the vegetarian menu may be doubly beneficial. “By having the vegetarian meal we hope to attract attention,” Lincoln said.
