Letter to the editor: Pointless exchange
August 30, 2000
It would seem that the Daily has chosen the perfect debate to bring to light: the evolution and the big bang theories. The debate has gone on for centuries, in one form or another with scientific theories and explanation clashing with religious faith. It is probable that it will continue because it is impossible for science to disprove the existence of something that is inherently unobservable. At the same time creationists cannot prove an entire branch of science incorrect on faith alone. So it boils down to is there a god and did he make everything? I would not be surprised if the constant assaults and counterattacks continued to appear in this newspaper for the remainder of the year, or such time that the editors tire of the idea. Currently, the only result of this series of publications is the strengthening of each side’s resolution. I doubt most people would give up their beliefs because of an exchange they saw in the paper. I believe in one loving God and everything is a result of his work. Some would label me ignorant, but in his August 30 letter, Roger J.M. Hughes seems to think those not yoked with the burden of religious faith have the clarity to proudly label themselves ignorant. First take the plank out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Justin Gruca
