Swing dance invades the Union

Jazz greats like Louis Prima and Duke Ellington sang about it, modern pop acts like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Brian Setzer Orchestra brought it back to the mainstream, and this weekend, the Iowa State Ballroom Dance Club will bring it to Ames. This Saturday, students and dance enthusiasts will dance the fox-trot, the Lindy, the waltz or swing to the sounds of the Ames Jazz Quartet. ÿAcross the nation, swing dancing is on the up-swing. “It definitely helps people’s interests some,” said Jean Olsen of the Ballroom Dance Club about the recent breakthrough of swing in mainstream music. The club’s socials have had a rise in the attendance over the summer. “During the school year, we usually have about ten to thirty people attend the socials, and the numbers fluctuate during the semester, depending on the students’ schedules,” Olsen said. The Ballroom Dancing Club has been preparing for this event for a couple of weeks. Lessons for those that don’t know how to dance are being held already and include the first class free of charge. There are two beginners’ classes held on Tuesdays, along with one section of intermediate and another section of advanced students. Another class will be held Friday for beginners, so new dancers can practice a few of their new steps before the dance on Saturday. “We get a mixed variety of new and experienced people at these functions,” Olsen said. The social will be held in the Great Hall in the ISU Memorial Union, doors open at 8 p.m., with a free lesson at 7 p.m. Admission to the event is $3.00. The first section of lessons have already begun, but there is another section beginning on Friday in Forker Hall in room 196. Classes are $25.00. Contact Mark Mehl at 572-6234 for more information.
