ISU hoping to keep Ohio winless in Ames
August 30, 2000
Saturday’s meeting between the Cyclones and the Bobcats of Ohio will mark the fifth time the two have tangled. All previous meetings proved the Cyclones to be the victors. In 1962, the Cyclones came away with the win by a final score of 31-22. 1989 saw a junior-college transfer tailback named Blaise enter upon the scene. Blaise Bryant lived up to his name on this night, racking up 213 yards on the way to a 28-3 romp by the Cyclones. The 213 yards were the most by a running back playing for the first time in Jack Trice Stadium’s 98 year history. Bryant scored half of ISU’s points on two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. This 1989 contest also marked just the third time lights were used at Jack Trice Stadium. 1992 unveiled a new offense for the Cyclones. The triple-option made its debut against Ohio, and Iowa State defeated the Bobcats by a score of 35-9. Chris Ulrich was the leading beneficiary of the new attack, scoring one touchdown while running for 120 yards. In the first half, Ulrich and the rest of the Cyclones had to wait through a 53-minute rain delay that saw the Cyclones still trailing by six when the downpour subsided. Late in the second quarter, the Cyclones turned it on. Scoring twice in less than four minutes, while also giving up a field goal, Iowa State went to the locker room with a 14-9 advantage. In the second half, ISU quarterback Bobby Utter connected with Lamont Hill. 83 yards later the Cyclones held a 21-9 lead and were well on their way to victory. 1995 ushered in a new era for both Iowa State and Ohio, and another offensive playbook for Iowa State. Dan McCarney and Jim Grobe were each coaching their first games for their respective teams. Iowa State had an attack that was heavy on Troy Davis. Davis was the star of this night. The sophomore racked up a then school-record 291 yards on 40 carries and three touchdowns. Davis’s efforts were well-timed as Iowa State needed a fourth quarter rally to stifle the Bobcats by a final of 36-21. The win saw the ISU fans tear down the goal post as Iowa State ended a 13-game losing streak.
