Storage policy changes in dorms

The Department of Residence began implementing a revised storage policy this fall for students who want to store items in the residence halls. Under the new policy, several items that could previously be stored during the school year can now only be stored during the summer. These items include lofts, lamps, couches and chairs. In addition, a procedure has been established for the use of storage space. Students must now sign a liability agreement stating that they are aware their belongings may be lost, damaged or stolen, and all items are now tagged with the owner’s name and address. Associate Director of Residence Virginia Arthur said problems with the previous storage policy had occurred for quite some time, and changes were finally implemented this fall. “Storage has been a problematic issue since I’ve been here, and I’ve been here for 25 years,” Arthur said. Director of Residence Randy Alexander said the storage policy was changed after students complained about lost or damaged items. The new storage policy establishes a regular storage procedure and reduces the likelihood of lost or misplaced possessions. The policy was also changed because the items were stored in a haphazard manner and created fire hazards, Arthur said. Department of Residence officials said all residents were told about the new policy when they moved in. However, many students remained uninformed about the policy changes. “My loft is in storage right now,” said James Barnd, senior in management of information systems. Others such as Johannes Robbins, junior in music, knew the policy had been changed, but didn’t know what the changes were. He still has a chair in storage.
