City hopes to help kids with stickers

It will soon be easier for children in Ames to find help if they feel in danger, thanks to the revival of a city program developed by the Ames Police Department. The program, Project Child Safe, uses bumper stickers to alert children to safety. “The main thing is that it is a city-wide operation designed to help missing or endangered children,” said Tom Shelton, community resource officer with Ames Police. Shelton, who’s in charge of the program, said bumper stickers will be placed on the front-passenger side of city vehicles. The stickers will signify that the workers in the vehicles are approachable and can provide assistance to a child in need. Shelton said city vehicles participating in the program will be equipped with radios that can reach the police department directly. The radios will increase response time, he said. The program’s motto is “Working Together to Make a Safe Community,” and Shelton said this accurately describes Project Child Safe. “Any time you can establish a rapport between departments, it helps better the community,” he said. Project Child Safe was originally initiated in 1985 and is now being restored by the department after being dormant for several years, said Sgt. Mike Johns of the Ames Police Department. “It became something we wanted to revive – to bring back as a service to the community,” Johns said. Before the program can be effective, he said residents must be aware of Project Child Safe and its goals. This fall, officers will travel to schools to inform youngsters about the program. Officers will also be present at football games and other events that draw large crowds, Shelton said. Project Child Safe will take a while to implement and not all city vehicles have the stickers, but Shelton said he is assured that eventually they will. “[The information] is getting out slowly but surely,” he said. The Traffic Engineering, Public Works, Power Plant, Water Pollution and Resource Recovery departments will participate in the program.
