Ames gets 10 new cable channels
August 20, 2000
At the beginning of August, 10 new channels were added to the AT&T Cable Services lineup for viewers in Ames and Nevada. Recipients now can watch Fox Sports Chicago, Home Shopping Network, The History Channel, Encore Plex, The Learning Channel, BET, VH-1 and Comedy Central. Cartoon Network and American Movie Classics also have been added as full-time channels. “We found these channels to be in high demand and knew we should add programming that meets the needs of our customers,” said Debora Blume, regional communications director for AT&T Cable Services. The changes were made in response to the number of calls AT&T Cable Services received last year. Deanna Gevock, senior in history, said she is excited to watch “Behind the Music” on VH-1.”I like how there are no more half-channels,” Gevock said in reference to stations airing one channel during the day and a different channel during evening and night hours. In addition to the 10 new analog channels, 14 digital channels also have been added. Encore True Stories, Encore Action, More MAX, Showtime 3, Showtime Extreme, The Movie Channel 2 and eight pay-per-view movie channels will be added to the AT&T Digital Cable lineup. The digital service is a complimentary product to analog, meaning viewers have to receive the analog service before they can get digital channels, Blume said. “In the space it takes for one analog channel, we can get 10 digital channels,” she said. “Digital cable comes in a package and our company picked the package with 10 new channels.” Douglas Nix, general manager for AT&T Cable Services, said the new services offer popular channels that he thinks customers will enjoy. Nix designed the new channel lineup in February, then sent it to the Iowa regional office, Blume said. Once contracts were set up, headquarters in Denver reviewed it in order to make it available to viewers in August. Students who have missed their favorite cable programs while being at Iowa State in the past now find comfort in knowing 10 new channels have been added. “They often advertised for The History Channel on A&E, and I longed for it,” said Kirsten Greenough, senior in elementary education. “I had heard a rumor that there were going to be new channels this year.” WB, a favorite channel for fans of “Dawson’s Creek,” “Charmed,” “7th Heaven,” and other shows, will also be added sometime this fall. “We have nothing to do with WB,” Blume said. “It is a broadcast station like FOX and CBS. Once we get the signal that the company is going to run [WB], we have to air it.”
