Drew slides through

There will be no blushing allowed as Iowa State’s Committee on Lectures opens the fall term with well-known speaker Dr. Drew Pinsky, tonight at Stephens Auditorium. Dr. Drew, a certified internist and addictionalogist, is best known for co-hosting “Loveline” on MTV with comedian Adam Corolla. His show takes questions on any subject relating to love, sex, dating and everything from teen pregnancy, suicide, domestic violence and sexually transmitted diseases to drug addiction and sexual dysfunction. Pinsky’s lecture will discuss drugs, sex and relationships, and many other topics students are willing to discuss with him. Pat Miller acts as the coordinator for the ISU Committee on Lectures. The committee chose Dr. Drew as the first lecture of the year for several reasons, including his high-profile show on MTV. “He’s so well known on issues that are important to students,” Miller said. “But he is entertaining as well.” In previous years, the Committee on Lectures has had a wide variety of guests, including Bill Cosby. “We normally bring in a comedian to do a welcome back,” Miller said. “And we have tried to bring him here before. Dr. Drew is very articulate, knowledgeable, and entertaining. It is a great opportunity for students to hear a well-known and respected speaker.” Dr. Drew’s television and radio programs, as well as his lecture, could be viewed as controversial but should be comfortable for students to speak about any subject. “He deals with controversial issues from the position of a well known professional,” Miller said. Pinsky is the medical director for the department of chemical dependency services at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, California. He is also the chief of service in the department of medicine there. “I find inspiration every day in other people,” Pinsky said in a frequently asked questions section on his Web site, www.drdrew.com. “I’m never anything but delighted to speak to people and interact with them. There is something about connecting with other people, especially when one can help them.” Miller said she hopes students will learn a little something from the presentation, and students are encouraged to participate in anyway they feel comfortable and to ask lots of questions. The lecture begins at 8 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium. The talk is free and open to the public. For more information about Dr. Drew: Adam and Drew’s offical website Loveline
