Dustin Avey, free safety for the ISU football team, will finish his football career this year, a fact which may disappoint many ISU fans. ISU Head Football Coach Dan McCarney said Avey, graduate student, has been a great asset to the team and a player he has enjoyed working with. “I have never been around a better young man in all my years of coaching,” he said. “They just don’t come any better. You would love to have Dustin in your home, working for you. You would love to be his boss.” Avey has an impressive record on the field, with 198 career tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and three interceptions and leads. Many people consider Avey to be among the best Cyclone secondaries to take the field in years. He said he hopes the Cyclones will have a winning season this year. “When you have such a willingness to succeed, the team will benefit,” he said. “We are definitely in a position to pull of some upsets in the Big 12 this year.” Presented with his choice of college football teams after graduating from Ames High, Avey decided to stay at Iowa State. He said he would still make the same choice. “I made a commitment to Coach McCarney and his staff, and I haven’t regretted it since,” he said Education is important to Avey, which is evidenced by his 3.47 undergraduate GPA at Iowa State and his numerous all-Big 12 academic honors. “Football gave me a chance to come to school here, and ISU has given me a first-class education,” he said. Avey will play 11 more games with Iowa State, but he said he is ready to move on.
