This thumb’s for you
July 26, 2000
The summer Daily has come to the end of a run with several newsworthy events. We have decided to look back over the past three months and give a thumbs up to some issues and a thumbs down to others because it’s a cute way to summarize how we feel.
ISU President Martin Jischke accepted the presidency of Purdue University and thus will end his tenure at Iowa State Aug. 13. The potential changes Jischke’s departure could bring to Iowa State and Purdue receives a thumbs up.
Both universities may benefit if Jischke focuses on more than just research at Purdue and Iowa State chooses a new president that does the same.
The Board of Regents and the administrators at Iowa State who worked toward the approval of benefits for same-sex partners receives a thumbs up.
The budget cuts and the state legislators who initiated them, costing 12 faculty members their jobs and leaving 43 positions unfilled, garner a thumbs down.
Our education ultimately suffers when faculty are cut.
The location and name of the new honors building also receives a thumbs down. This invasion of central campus is like unchecked aggression toward the natural beauty of one of the finest campuses in the United States; it should be left untouched.
Also, the legacy of a president is better known five years after he leaves. Why reward someone who is leaving us for greener pastures?
The parental notification bill at Iowa State in which the university calls parents if a student is in trouble for underage drinking or for using illegal drugs gets a thumbs down.
College students are at an age when they are independent and thus capable of making their own decisions and suffering the consequences without Mommy and Daddy getting involved.
All of those people who volunteered this summer, for events ranging from the Special Olympics to the Iowa Games to the blood drives, receive a thumbs up.
Those who selflessly give to others don’t usually receive the acknowledgment they deserve, well here it is: Good job!
Those who didn’t give of themselves receive a thumbs down. A half hour or hour isn’t a lot to give when others are in need.
The cleanup of College Creek receives a thumbs up. This was long overdue, but any effort to protect the environment is a good one.
Marcus Fizer being drafted by former head coach Tim Floyd earns a thumbs up.
Fizer will be close to his Cyclone roots, and hopefully, Floyd will act as his guardian angel during his infant years in the NBA.
This summer was definitely full of newsworthy stories.
Good luck with what’s next for you.
